There have been a lot of rumors swirling around that the new Wii U is going to break ground as a cheap, next-generation console that will immediately rival the PS3 and Xbox 360.

But, the real question is, how cheap? Well, according to a rumor being spread around, the Wii U will launch at the ultra-affordable price point of $200. If this comes to fruition, it will be a really big deal for the console industry. It could happen, as Nintendo has been saying time and time again that the Wii U will be competitively priced, and that people will be “surprised” by it.

The rumor is well founded, coming directly from GameStop initially, so only time will tell whether things pan out the way the rumors say they will. However, if the price point ends up being right, is it possible that we could be sacrificing some of the features that have been toted by Nintendo since its initial reveal? I would think so, but I highly doubt that Nintendo would say one thing to fans, and then go do something else entirely. We should know for sure on September 13th, which is when Nintendo will make an official statement about the specs of the Wii U and potentially its price point.

For me, the odd thing about these claims is that the rumors that were plugging up the mill in the past were very convinced that the Wii U would be anywhere from $250 to $350. While the former number is not much more than the latest rumor, a price of $350 would be less surprising and ultimately more expected.

No matter what, it appears that Nintendo is aiming to be the first current/next-generation console not to be astronomically priced as of launch day.
