[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]As an RPGer, I was never fond of first person shooters. And over the years I have begun to dislike such popular franchises as Call of Duty. Due to many reasons. Now I predict I am going to have some 12 year old “gamer” commenting saying “It’s cause you got no swag with dem no scopes”, but just hear me out on this one.
Call of Duty is a massively popular first person shooter for most consoles, and has an enormous fan base. Starting from Call of Duty: The Finest Hour and to Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3. I have a ton of friends who enjoyed playing this game day after day and I have to admit that I have played many of the Call of Duty games, (In my opinion Call of Duty 4 has to be my favourite, due to its storyline and its simple multiplayer). The last Call of Duty game I ever played was Black Ops. But over these past months I have begun to dislike the series.
The Stories
Most of the recent Call of Duty story lines have consisted of Americans fighting the Russians over some nuclear war that will never happen. Really guys the Cold War ended 20 years ago. Isn’t there anything else you can write about. The developers really try and make the game action packed like some James Bond movie and never really focus on perfecting a compelling and engaging story line. Being an RPGer, Story is pretty much half of my life. Now an action packed campaign may be your thing if you’re a casual gamer, but for me it doesn’t do it.
Other Games
Due to the majority of people who play Xbox having at least one copy of a popular Call of Duty game, it does not give the opportunity for people to play other games, which could be popular. But people are too distracted trying to do 360 no scope headshots with a tomahawk…or something. An example is Homefront. I played that and I thought it was a fantastic game. With a good storyline and an average multiplayer. But I think it was not very popular due to everyone focusing on their MW2 skills and I believe most people just thought it would just be a Call of Duty copy. Which It wasn’t.
Multiplayer
The majority of the fan base play the Call of Duty series due to its multiplayer, where it’s not a case of working together and achieving the objective. It’s about each individual leaving the pack and killing other wolves in the most skillful or easiest way they can. This is a reason why I dislike it. I am more of a team player and prefer to play shooters like Ghost Recon where it’s your teamwork that wins you games and not an individual. Really, all the Call of Duty developers need to do is add experience points with some cool looking guns and some ridiculous game modes and it will draw in thousands of “gamers”.
Awards
You may come to me and say “Oh Adam what about all those awards that they have achieved”. Let’s be honest most of these awards are user voted. And with most of the Call of Duty fan base being naïve kids and have no opportunity to play other games, because they like the to look of their shinny golden weapon. This brings another point.
With the future release of Black Ops II, it doesn’t seem like the franchise is going to slow down anytime soon. Drawing in massive audiences, who will probably get a surprise with its new Sci-fi theme. But I hope one day…a killer will rise and CoD will be be slain forever!
